yesyesyes! I LOVE cryptids! As a kid, my favorite were jackalopes, and I wanted anything I saw with a jackalope on it. I also really like the idea of like, spooky woodland dudes that are also kind. I often wonder if I myself am a cryptid in some way, shape, or form, but I always get stuck on 'which one?'
Cryptids are one of my favorites! I kind of count cryptids in general, and more specifically the Jersey Devil as one of my constels, and while I'm not the best at learning all of the lore, ones related to my home state of New Jersey are a major favorite of mine! Mainly since the Pine Barrens has a lot of myths and legends even just beyond the most iconic one. And like, we shape so much of the state off of that iconic one! Like our state's hockey team is the Jersey Devils and there's a newspaper that's like NJ's version of The Onion but in print called The South Jersey DEVILer and... Yeah! The point is, they're very important to me and I'm thrilled to see this on the forums!
I think cryptids are extremely fun to think about! My absolute favorite is the "Not Deer". Even though the majority of these sightings can be explained by known deer illnesses. Hell, maybe because so many can be explained through deer illnesses it makes the more outlandish ones seem more possible.
I tend to waffle back and forth on them. There's a lot of interesting creatures out there with a range of emotional flavors (the Squank being a good example of a criptid that is more comical/sad than scary) and it often feels like actual living folklore. There's some pretty eirry/unsettling stories out there, and I love that fact--especially when it parallels with my own life.
On the other hand, though, there's a lot of stories about criptids that fall flat as well. Even though I'm aware most of the good stories are probably manufactured as well as the bad ones, I still want to believe or at least be left with the feeling of possibility.
