Hello everyone. My name is Nat, and I am a Clinical Psychology PhD candidate. I am currently working on my doctoral dissertation on the topic of nonhuman identity. I have been a member of the therian and other nonhuman communities for over 12 years. Since I was a senior in high school, I have been committed to studying psychology and pursuing a career in the scholarly research of nonhuman identity. I previously completed an undergraduate thesis on therianthropy, and I am very excited to continue this path with my dissertation.
The purpose of my research study is to describe the lived experiences and mental health of individuals holding nonhuman identities while also accounting for gender and autistic identities. This study will broadly use a minority stress framework to explore the roles of stress and resilience on mental health for nonhumans. This is very important to contextualize any mental health challenges outside of nonhuman identity itself, so as not to pathologize it. This study will recruit both nonhuman- and human-identified participants to compare groups on mental health, well-being, stressors, and resilience.
This study will consist of an online survey expected to take about 20 minutes to complete. You are eligible to participate in the study if you 1) are 18 years of age or older and 2) reside in the United States or Canada. Those who are eligible to participate and complete the survey will be compensated with a $10 electronic gift card to Target or Amazon (your choice).
This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board at Palo Alto University. Because the survey asks about mental health difficulties and stress, you may experience emotional distress while completing the survey; however, you may skip questions you do not feel comfortable answering and can cease participation at any time without penalty by closing the survey window. Please note that if you do not submit the survey, you will not receive compensation.
If you have any questions about participation, please email me directly at nbricker@paloaltou.edu. Thank you very much for reading this, and thank you in advance for participating if you choose to do so!
