I've seen a few threads about the broken badges, but I felt this was mostly a unique suggestion and didn't want to go off-topic!
The suggestion is to allow users to upload their own badges.
This would fix the problems with the badges being broken due to hotlinking. This way, we could just upload images to our own servers/accounts and be responsible for them ourselves if it breaks.
It would also fix the issue with there being multiple different symbols and preferences in the community. For example how there aren't any agreed upon flags for certain identities and there are alternative symbols for subcultures like fictionkin, etc. It would let people make their own symbols if they prefer and there aren't any pre-existing.
There might need to be a cap at a certain number of posts before you can do this to prevent trolls, but otherwise, I think it could work.
As fun as that idea is, and I'd honestly appreciate it, I'd honestly not really go for it. Too risky. Even with post cap, you have no idea if someone is just gonna go rogue, get hacked, spam, etcetc
Like yeah cool idea but I'd vote against it myself.

It's a cool idea, but I'm with Krit. Too many ways that can go wrong and eat the site's bandwidth. What we can do is settle on a place to keep the image files that we can be certain is reliable and won't get broken.
I personally just uploaded all of my badges to my Neocities account- i would urge other people to make one too, as it's free, and even if you don't want to make a whole website it's at least a good place to host images : )

That's fair, though I think the risk is about the same as if someone were to spam posts and what not. At least then it's contained to a person's profile. I can see your point though.

I was thinking more along the lines of you upload it to an image host of choice and then link it to your badges. Although as I said, I don't know if the plugins would allow for that easily. I agree with you though that the image files should be uploaded in a reliable place.

As far as I know, Neocities doesn't like you doing that since hotlinking like that uses up their bandwidth and Neocities isn't meant to be an image host. They aren't exactly a big company that can handle large amounts of people using it as an image host and sharing service.

ah , yeah that's fair. didn't really think about that :'v
Guess I'll have to find somewhere else to host images
Update: Have started used ImgBB, not sure yet if there's a limit to how many images I can host w/ the free version- image size limit is 32MB, but honestly that's just fine for me. Lmk if this site actually sucks or if anyone knows of a better one :]

I fixed the broken images. I'm trying out hosting the images on FileGarden.com. Unlike Neocities, the stated purpose of FileGarden is to host images for anyone to use on forums. Then Page and I started adding even more badges, so take a look and see if there are more that you want to put in your profile.
Letting any user set badges in NNP's forum software would be bad security, so we won't do that. We staff can add more badges for you, though. If any of you have images that you want to use as badges here, it would be great if you would use this thread (edit: use this other thread instead, "User Badge Suggestions") as a place to show us those images. You can use FileGarden to host your image files, too. Then we staff will decide whether to add your images to the list of badges in NNP's forum software.
Most of the badges here so far are for expressing either your alterhumanity or your gender/sexuality. That leaves out a lot of other symbols for personal expression that folks might want to put in their bio. What's missing? How about symbols for one's religion (or lack of religion)? If we display in our bios that we're Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, humanist, or whatever else, then that would help dispel the common misconception that being otherkin is itself a religion or a Pagan group. If you have an image file of your religion's symbol, and the graphic style and file type would fit in with the other badges here, then I'd be especially interested in adding those to our list of badges.
