what are some things about you that influence your alterhumanity? like i have a very strong sense of smell, (which is not always great, sometimes i’m the only person in a room who has to deal with an unpleasant odor), and one of the weird ways that manifests is in my ability to smell blood. It’s pretty weird honestly, because i only started noticing it in high school, but basically every once in a while i can smell blood when someone is bleeding. granted, they have to be very nearby, and it’s a very faint smell, and only happens sometimes, and never when i have a stuffy nose, but it’s still pretty unique. because it only really started being something i noticed in high school, it wasn’t one of those “assumed everyone can do it” things, but rather something that i would bring up at parties with close friends in a sort of half-joking manner, where i would intentionally leave it up to interpretation whether i was serious or just indulging in my friend group’s weird sense of humor.
it did lead to a few slightly awkward moments, like one time i was with a friend who gets semi frequent nosebleeds and absentmindedly let them know their nose was bleeding despite facing away from them trying to find something. it took them a second to realize bc they just sort of went into autopilot to check for themselves and get a tissue, but then they just thought it was funny. another thing about it was that it became very awkward to be around certain people at certain times of the month because i felt like somehow just being able to tell was invasive. luckily i’ve become acclimated enough that i don’t really notice any blood smell unless i focus.
but the reason i bring up my weird nose is because one of my big alterhuman identities— the first one i became aware of, in fact— was as a vampire. i think that the fact my sense of smell started changing around eighth grade must at least partially collaborate with the fact that’s when i started realizing my vampire identity.
what about you? also, these traits don’t have to be physical, for example a big part of my corvid identity is based on my birth name (which i switched the gender of and added to my hyphenated real name) is roughly equivalent to “born of ravens” (i reworded that s bit in case anyone tries to figure out my name from it) and a big part of my selkie identity stems from my mom joking that her grandmother (my great-grandmother) was a selkie.
