First things first: I have not designed a fictionkind symbol. This is a much larger project than the otherhearted symbol and I would not feel comfortable putting out a bunch of symbols in a poll like I did back then. What I've instead done is figure out some elements that could be part of the symbol and made a few examples of how they can look.
The elements I would personally like from this symbol are:
- A mouth to represent oral storytelling
- Quotation marks to symbolize stories
- Pigment dot/indentation/writing instrument to symbolize the first ways stories were recorded
The ways I've personally tried to illustrate these are
- A circle with a horizontal line
- Four small vertical (curved) lines
- Black dots and a vertical line
I'm sure there are other ways to illustrate them. Here are the ways I've put them together, just as examples:
What I'm asking from all of you is help coming up with alternative elements and meanings, and help designing some final symbols that the majority of fictionkind would be happy to use. You can either write a detailed description and I will draw it for you, or you can post your own drawings.
The only things to keep in mind when designing a symbol are:
- Simplicity: It should be easy for people to draw the symbol from memory.
- Clarity: There should be no confusion about what the elements of the symbol mean.
- Originality: The symbol should be distinct enough to not be confused for other symbols or logos.
- Universality: The elements of the symbol should make sense regardless of the language and culture of the person using it (as far as is possible). Meaning no letters!
- Silhouette: The symbol should work regardless of its color.
When we have a good handful of symbols, I will create a poll, which I will again need help to share on as many social platforms as possible, and a final symbol will then be agreed upon by the community.
